The Organized Fraud Section of the Ottawa Police Service would like to remind the public that, in good times and bad, some people seek to profit from the pain and suffering of others as well as the generosity of those who wish to assist.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR WALLET!
It is recommended that you conduct research before deciding which charitable organizations to assist. By choosing a recognized agency, you can ensure that your money reaches the proper destination and is used for its intended purpose.
Ensure you know how your contributions will be used, and by whom, when making a charitable donation.

Refer also to the Canada Revenue Agency for more excellent information and tips on ensuring your dollars are going where you want them.
There are many legitimate charitable organizations doing wonderful work in our communities and around the world.
